Our favourite Montenegrin Beach Club

Our favourite Montenegrin Beach Club

March 2016
Montenegro, Tivat

Like so many of the Adriatic beaches, the ones in Montenegro are rocky beaches too. But there is a fabulous choice of beach clubs in the area, where you don't mind the rocks at all. Drive to the beach club called "Almara" which is approximately 15 minutes from the hotel. Located in Lustica Bay, your best bet is to reserve sunbeds ahead of your visit with the Concierge of the hotel and spend the day sunbathing, swimming in the clear blue waters, and enjoying their lovely food.

Winter in Montenegro

Last autumn, my boss asked me if I would go to our sister hotel in Montenegro to help out for a few months until the new General Manager of the hotel can start there. Not only was this very generous of him and a huge career opportunity for me, but it was also a new adventure and a winter away from grey Berlin. They have palm trees in Montenegro, so I knew Alex would say yes to joining me too. Because he wants to live where Palm Trees grow... I know, bless him! So there were a few organisational challenges to overcome, many flights back and forth had to be booked and some conversations with people telling me I could do this!! Quite scary to suddenly be in charge of a fabulous luxury hotel in Southern Europe, even if it's just for a short while. It was a fabulous opportunity for me to see what it is like to be a Hotel General Manager. In theory, I have an idea what a GM does of course, but it is always different if you are actually doing it yourself. But everybody I spoke to, thought I was up to it, so I started to believe it too. And now over half of the three months have already passed by and we are loving our winter in Montenegro. Hence I would like to share our experiences with you and tell you what there is to see, do and explore in this wonderful small country on the Adriatic coast. It is of course a wonderful summer destination, but it definitely has many appeals in winter too!

Regent Porto Montenegro

Regent Hotels & Resorts opened this beautiful hotel in the summer of 2013. It is built within the superyacht marina of Porto Montenegro, a newly developed town next to the Montenegrian town of Tivat. Montenegro is still a relatively undiscovered gem, where eastern Europe meets west. The country's 295 km coastline has countless uninhabited islands, secret coves and charming harbours alongside unique historical sites – reminders of the country’s grand past. And Regent was one of the first international hotel companies to open a luxury hotel here. It is quite a special one altogether, due to its marina location. When you stay there, you live in between these fantastic boats and you are part of everyday village life. I loved it! And I got to work here for a while and I really enjoyed it. The team of the hotel has been very welcoming and accommodating to Alex and me all together. We lived in an apartment opposite the hotel and I loved my short walk to work. I loved that I know people when I walked around the village. I loved the atmosphere of this beautiful place although it was a bit quiet during winter. For me, this is definitely a destination one should consider when looking for that winter getaway! When the sun is out, it is really warm, the restaurants and cafes open their terraces and life happens again outside. back then, tourists during wintertime were pretty much a rarity, but I would not take this for granted that it stays like this forever.

Destination Montenegro

1. Porto Montenegro Located in the spectacular Boka Bay and surrounded by those typical black mountains, Porto Montenegro is a superyacht marina and residential village at the same time. It is part of the city of Tivat and located in a former historic naval base. Today it is home to over 450 yachts, more than 250 waterfront apartments, the 5-star luxury Regent Porto Montenegro Hotel, and over 50 retail stores and restaurants. The views of the stunning boats and the beautiful surroundings are always present and I couldn't seem to stop taking photos. It is a small village and every time I stepped out of the door I met someone I knew. And I have to admit I quite liked it for a change. Living and working there, you are part of this life in this beautiful spot and for visitors that come here, they feel they can be part of this too. Where in the world can you actually stay in between those fabulous boats and feel they are part of your everyday life too. Even if only for a short while... 2. Kotor Kotor is probably the most famous town in Montenegro as many international cruise ships include Kotor in their Mediterranean tours. The town of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site full of cobblestone streets, polished marble piazzas, noble palazzos, and many cathedrals. Home to numerous sacred sites, with church bells ringing constantly in its café ringed squares. Unlike many historic towns, Kotor, is a living, vibrant place with year-round activity. The old city walls lead up the mountain to Kotor Fortress, from where you have stunning views of the whole Bay of Kotor which is the largest fjord in the Mediterranean Sea. A must-do when in Montenegro! 3. Tivat Tivat is located in the central part of the bay of Kotor, south of the Vrmac Hill. Home to Porto Montenegro’s marina village, Tivat is the heart of the countries tourism industry. Catering to its bustling nautical community with new restaurants, bars, and cafes popping up across town, Tivat also boasts numerous pretty nearby coves and the greatest number of sunny days of any town on the Bay. Once the site of the Illyrian Queen Teuta’s summer residence, and later the seaside location of choice during the Roman, Medieval, and Venetian eras, Tivat’s deep-water harbour was transformed into an Austrian naval base at the end of the 19th century. Tivat and Porto Montenegro lead into one another and offer a long coastline walk with lots to see and do. 4. Budva As Montenegro’s busiest tourist destination, Budva’s old town is a Venetian maze of cobblestone streets anchored by the 15th-century citadel. Very seasonal, and a tourist Mecca, Budva comes alive in the summer months as seemingly every spare corner is converted into an outdoor bar or shop selling beach toys. With a well-deserved reputation for nightlife, Budva is now established as one of the Adriatic’s leading party destinations.

Montenegro, first time around

A hidden gem in the Mediterranean where mass tourism during the summer months has not arrived just yet (at least it hadn't in 2015 when we first visited). Beautiful scenery, clear blue waters, sunny weather, beaches, culture, and tasty restaurants. (link: http://www.visit-montenegro.com text: Montenegro) really came on my radar when the hotel company I work for opened a hotel there in 2014. The country is located south of Croatia, has approximately 625.000 inhabitants and its capital city is called Podgorica. Tourism is a very important source of income and it is rapidly growing due to the country's diversity and great offerings. We flew into Dubrovnik, rented a car, and drove south towards the town of Tivat, one of the towns in the Bay of Kotor. It takes approximately one hour to drive, also depending on the time spent crossing the border from Croatia to Montenegro. Once you arrive on the coast, you drive down the street until you get to a ferry crossing. Take it to get to the other side of the bay and you will then reach Tivat and the fabulous Regent Porto Montenegro hotel within ten minutes.

This (link: https://tidd.ly/2ZCJBHd text: Regent Porto Montenegro ) hotel is built within the superyacht marina of Porto Montenegro and has to die for views of the boats and the whole bay. It gives an excellent starting point to explore the area and this fabulous country. The place is not packed with tourists yet and you feel quite special staying here. It is lively but not touristy, you will always get a seat in the restaurants and bars. It is also local and yet stylish, it is modern but also packed with history. Go now, before the rest of the world will follow. The (link: http://www.regenthotels.com/en/Porto-Montenegro text: hotel) is built within the village, so when you sit down on the terrace for breakfast, for example, you can witness everyday life in the village. You see people going about their day to day business. You feel immediately part of the village while you are on holiday. I loved being right in the middle of it, it felt so familiar. The rooms are lovely, spacious, and in modern maritime decor. The staff throughout the hotel is very attentive, friendly, and helpful. The food is delicious and everything looks so beautiful. I didn't want our holiday to come to an end. I could have stayed and stayed...

Kotor & Perast

From Tivat, it takes approximately 20 minutes to drive to the famous city of Kotor, a Unesco World Heritage site. Located on the southeastern part of the bay, especially the old town is well worth a visit. All houses are made of white stones and above the town is the ancient city wall and an old castle which you can visit. Buy a 3€ per person ticket and walk the wall up the hill. You will have fabulous views over the bay and many great photo opportunities. Kotor is also on the route of many cruise ships that travel around the Adriatic coast and during the warmer time of year, you will usually see a big white cruise ship or two in the bay. After visiting Kotor, we drove on to the next town called Perast. A traditional Montenegrin village located directly by the sea. Walk along the picturesque street by the water and pick one of the restaurants for a peaceful lunch spot and one of the most beautiful views in the world in my opinion.
