During our three months stay in Montenegro, we were trying to see as much of the country as we possibly could. One weekend we visited Montenegro's capital city, Podgorica. So far, we had only ever been to the airport and now decided to see what else there is to see and do. The city is located in the south of the country and is Montenegro's largest city with just under 200.000 inhabitants. It is located between the rivers Ribnica and Moraca and surrounded by mountains which are accessible for skiing. The architecture in the city is mixed, showing the many influences the different regimes had on the city. From the ottoman times, there are still many examples to be found in the city, including two mosques and a Turkish Clock Tower which is one of the monuments that can be visited. Podgorica was badly destroyed in the second world war and afterward many typical mass residential blocks were erected. Today, you see a mix of the old and new including contemporary glass and steel constructions, the Millennium bridge all in combination with the more historic buildings of the past. Podgorica is Montenegro's capital city and the cultural center of this region. Great to spend a day exploring and visiting the few sights. Lots of choices for going out at night!

It is a new, modern hotel with a sleek, stylish design. Upon arrival, guests get straight into the heart of the hotel, The Living Room. It is not only the lobby, it is also a café, bar, restaurant, reception and night club at the same time. And it is busy! Not only hotel guests, also locals come here to chat, to meet and to get together. A great feeling on arrival and very welcoming to start with. Check-in was fast and we could go straight up to our room. The room was large, big bed, modern design, with a desk, seating area and a good-size bathroom (with lovely Molton Brown products) . After dropping our stuff of, we went downstairs to The Living Room and had a bite to eat. Great selection on the menu at really fair prices... Great first impression of this cool hotel and we did really enjoy our stay there.

From the hotel, we walked into town taking in our surroundings. We walked down the tree-lined street called Bulevar Svetog Petra Cetinjskog which seemed to be the main street leading through town. We see a mixture of old and new buildings and then got to the city's largest river, the Moraca. To the left, we saw the modern Millenium Bridge, which is one of the main sights of the city. And to the right was the old town with the typical stone buildings. Before we got into the small streets of the old town, we see King Nikola's monument and then continued to walk to the famous Clock Tower. There were only a few sights that tourists can visit but it is always nice just to walk the streets, watch how life goes by and how people go about their business. One day is enough to walk through the city to get a good impression and overview.

From the city's old town, we walked downtown as we were told most of the good bars and restaurants are located here. We walked past the Trg Republike, the Place of the Republic, and turned left into Bokeska, the street where one restaurant and bar is next to each other. It must be an even greater place to visit in the summer as everyone has a terrace out to the street. And it must be very lively and entertaining too, a great reason to come back!! We chose a bar called "Strudla" which has a very cool modern wood design, a great drinks selection, and happy hour. We stayed for a while and then headed over to "Hemera" for dinner and had the best chocolate dessert we had in a very long time. We would definitely come back for the nightlife should we return to the area!!
