We wanted to spend some days relaxing after the crazy 2023 when we moved yet again and finished off the year with a 4000km road trip from Croatia throughout Germany and back to visit friends and family. In the middle of this big road trip, we stopped in southern Bavaria for some much-needed R&R. The hotel we wanted to stay at was supposed to be modern, yet with a sense of place, located in or close to the mountains, offer more than just the proximity to skiing possibilities and it was supposed to be affordable during this peak travel period. We found many options during our search but nothing ticked all the boxes until we came across "(link: https://www.das-achental.com/en/ text: Das Achental)". Located in Bavaria, close to Lake Chiemgau, between Munich, the Austrian border, and the Alps. Recently refurbished, modern and traditional feel and a great offer for activities in the hotel and the area. We loved the look and feel, the activities on offer sounded great, they had a New Year's Party taking place and one of their restaurant served Fondue! Decision made...

Winter things to do in Chiemgau

The obvious choice for things to do in the mountains in winter is skiing. But we were looking for alternatives to keep us entertained. We tried the beautiful Spa of the hotel, jumped in the pool, joined the Yoga sessions, had a facial, and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of the Wellness facilities. We went snowshoe walking with Walter which was recommended by the hotel and a highlight of our trip. He is a mountain guide and skiing instructor, he is local and full of stories, facts, and jokes. A great way to spend a winter day, thank you (link: https://w-wolfenstetter.com text: Walter) for taking us around. We went up the mountain "(link: https://www.kampenwand.de text: Kampenwand)", one of the highest mountains in this region. The cable car, which was built in 1957 and still looks antique, took us up to 1470m high. The ski area is very small and due to lack of snow, we pretty much had the area to ourselves. We went for an hour-long hike with great views of the Alps and had lunch at the mountain hut. The hotel is located in the moor area "(link: https://www.chiemsee-alpenland.de/entdecken/alle-sehenswuerdigkeiten/aussichtsturm-kendlmuehlfilzen-grassau-43af3c0059 text: Kendlmühlfilzen)" which is amazing for walking, running and dog walking. It is one of the largest, raised moors of Bavaria and protected since 1992. We visited the Observation Tower for great views of the whole area and enjoyed exploring. Many things to do besides skiing, so a two thumbs up from us for the destination!

This hotel offers relaxed luxury in cozy, warm, and friendly surroundings. It was recently completely refurbished, 2000 sqm of wellness area and an 18-hole golf course have been added and the hotel is now a member of Design Hotels. Offering 179 rooms and suites, a 2 Michelin star restaurant plus 3 more restaurants and bars, and many leisure activities. The breakfast buffet is extensive, large, and offers anything you can wish for. As a bonus, for New Year's there was a Jazz band playing. Lovely touch, I enjoyed that. We also loved the additional restaurant in the hut in the garden, where different kinds of Fondue were offered. I am still dreaming of that Cheese fondue! Staff are very friendly and forthcoming, always ready to assist and look after the guests. We enjoyed our experience at "Das Achental" very much and would definitely return.

Brandenburg

Werder Island, close to Berlin

To the southwest of Berlin lies the town called "Werder" on the shores of the river "Havel". It is famous for its fruit plantations and gets really busy during fruit bloom times. Part of the town is on an island which is connected to the main city. The island has a central market place, cobblestone streets, a fruit museum, and a beautiful old windmill. There is a great restaurant selection also close to the water with great nature views. We loved wandering around the old houses, enjoying the sun for a coffee break, and sitting on the swings pretending to the 10 years old again. A really pretty little place, perfect to spend some time to wander around, take photos, eat and drink!
