Linz

What is Linz like?

We wanted to have a little change in scenery and decided to take a day trip to Linz. We hadn´t heard much about Linz until now and we only knew we could go there in a day and come back. Then I started to look for recommendations and things to do and I came across this fabulous travel blog called Chronic Wanderlust. Many great recommendations, not only for Linz, have a look https://www.chronic-wanderlust.com Thank you Viki for the great recommendations. Linz is Austrias third largest city and is located between Salzburg and Vienna. It used to be an industrial city known for producing steel. But in the last twenty years the city reinvented itself and is now a famous university town with a buzzing cultural scene. And so we decided to have a look for ourselves. We left home in the morning and arrived in Linz on a Saturday morning. We parked close to the Mariendome and had the most impressive sight of the city right in front of us. We then continued our walk through the pedestrianised inner city and were quite impressed. Lovely old buildings, some cool shops not only the usual ones that you find on every high street. Then we found our breakfast spot where we reserved a table. A really cute little place called "Little Dancer" with great coffee and even breakfast burritos (Alex´s favourite) on the menu. The perfect start to our little city tour and all thumbs up for this cafe and its team, we loved it. We continued our tour towards the river, along the Danube and towards the Mural Harbour Gallery. And then the rain came and decided against the boat tour to see the murals. Maybe we come back during a warmer period next time. We continued back towards the city and one thing I still find strange is the fact that shops and some cafes and restaurants are closed on a Saturday afternoon, even in the big cities in Austria. Only once we got back to the center, there was life on the streets again. We found another cute coffee place, walked up to the castle museum and had a great view of the city. So what is Linz like? Well quite nice for a day trip or short break I would say. Lovely historic buildings, wonderful views of the city, the great Danube and a fabulous selection of cafes and restaurants to spend time and taste great things. Try it!

Over the past weeks, I have done some research into the must does in Austria to create my own Austria Bucket List. I read other Travel Blogs, I asked my Instagram community, I checked the website of the Austrian Tourism Board and read many other articles and recommendation pages, to come up with a list of at least 10 things I feel we really must do in Austria. Some are obvious and I found them on nearly every list I looked at. And some are a little different and I am really excited to start planning and doing all things on my list. I will update this article as we work on experiencing our bucket list and maybe a few of them are for you too: - **Hallstatt** - Visit this town for the scenery, the cobblestone streets, the salt mines, the cafes on the lake. It is a must-do, it´s on many lists and I so look forward to seeing it for myself! - **Salzburg** - I landed at Salzburg Airport to go skiing a few times in the past but I have never visited the city. So Salzburg is definitely a to-do to explore the city along with the (link: https://www.salzburg.info/en/salzburg/the-sound-of-music/shooting-locations text: “Sound of Music”) filming locations. Thank you Sarah Post for the hint, love it!! - **Wine Picnic** - There is such a lovely wine culture in Austria and I want us to get a picnic with accompanying wine from a local winemaker and enjoy the delicious products sitting in the grass! - **Walk a treetop path** (Baumwipfelpfad Salzkammergut or maybe Baumwipfelweg Althodis im Burgenland, I am still deciding) - **Visit the “(link: https://www.hotel-hirschen-bregenzerwald.at text: Hotel Hirschen)” in Schwarzenberg / Vorarlberg** - a tip from my Travel Industry friend Camille Cutrone Holubar, President of Vista Travel Consultants Inc. She has wholeheartedly recommended this very historic hotel (a hotel since 1755) and the full gastronomic experience that comes with it. So this definitely goes my Austria Bucket List, thank you Camille this is exactly what I was looking for! Can’t wait to go!! - As recommended by the “(link: https://miavia.com text: MiaVia)” Team in Vienna, visit **Burg Bernstein** in the Burgenland area for a historic and quiet weekend away - **Lake Hoping in (link: https://www.salzkammergut.at/en/lakes/artikel/detail/3029/lakes-salzkammergut.html text: Salzkammergut)** - pick a few of the 67 lakes and explore a handful at a time. Buy or rent a SUP and explore from the waterside. Cannot wait for summer to start! - Spend a night in a **mountain hut**! - Ride an **Alpine Slide ** - **Coffee House Hoping in Vienna** - so many great Cafes in the city, so many different experiences

Exploring Oggau

Another lockdown weekend with sunshine and I wanted to find a new destination to go hiking. My search on (link: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/ text: Outdoor Active)led me to Oggau, a town located on the shores of Neusiedlersee close to the Hungarian border and right in the middle of one of Austria´s most famous wine-growing regions. we were sold immediately, backed Joschi, a picnic and comfortable shoes and drove out of the city. After just over an hours drive, we arrived in the town of Oggau, famous for its red wine. There is a panoramic wine hiking trail leading through the vineyards, all with pretty views of the lake and the little towns and villages of the area. There are picnic tables and benches on many corners, inviting visitors and hikers to take a break and enjoy the view. Of walked 12k of this potential 34k route and had a really lovely day out. And we cannot wait to return once the gastronomy opens, we must try to famous local red wine. We will be back soon!

Lower Austria

Blooming Trees

I am always curious to find out what else we can get up to close to Vienna. So I am reading various newsletters and keep looking on Social Media for inspiration. Last weeks´ newsletter from Vienna´s digital city magazine (link: https://goodnight.at/magazin/freizeit/2519-raus-aus-der-stadt-iii-2 text: "Good Night" ) featured an article about the blooming Apricot trees in the Wachau area, close to the city of Krems. (The magazine is available only in german, but I linked it above anyway in case you want to look it up.) The Wachau area of Austria has been home to apricot fruits dating back to 1509. From 1890 this fruit was planted and produced heavily in the area and is now important produce of the area. The weather was lovely that weekend and we decided to make a day trip out of it. We packed a picnic and our dog and off we went on the motorway. It took just over an hour to get to the village of Angern. There are no official parking spaces but you can park along the main street and join the hiking trail called "(link: https://www.marillenweg.at text: Marillen Erlebnisweg)" from there. It is about 5km long and takes you through the Vineyards and past the Apricot Trees. Along the track, you find 5 stations with a lot of information about the region and the nature you find there. The area is a little hilly and you have great views of the Danube, the villages and churches as well as the vineyards and fruit trees. It is a really lovely day out, especially when the sun is out and you can also buy some local produce at the farm shops to take home.

Since the start of the first lockdown, we have discovered hiking for us. When the lockdown started again in November 2020 we continued to explore the area around Vienna on foot again. Most of the hikes have either been recommended to us or we researched them using the “(link: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/mobile-app.html text: Outdoor Active App)”. This app shows you the hike in great detail. You can download the map before you go and it tracks the progress along the course. You can choose hikes, save them for later, share with your friends and families and track your own path too. It comes as an app or you check out their (link: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/#gref text: website) instead. If you like you can follow our hikes directly in the App too to keep seeing where we go and what we see, (link: https://www.outdooractive.com/de/list/habe-ich-schon-gemacht/178326747/?utm_source=unknown&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=user-shared-social-content&share=~znj3nktk$4ossp94t text: click here!)
