Another lockdown weekend with sunshine and I wanted to find a new destination to go hiking. My search on (link: https://www.outdooractive.com/en/ text: Outdoor Active)led me to Oggau, a town located on the shores of Neusiedlersee close to the Hungarian border and right in the middle of one of Austria´s most famous wine-growing regions. we were sold immediately, backed Joschi, a picnic and comfortable shoes and drove out of the city. After just over an hours drive, we arrived in the town of Oggau, famous for its red wine. There is a panoramic wine hiking trail leading through the vineyards, all with pretty views of the lake and the little towns and villages of the area. There are picnic tables and benches on many corners, inviting visitors and hikers to take a break and enjoy the view. Of walked 12k of this potential 34k route and had a really lovely day out. And we cannot wait to return once the gastronomy opens, we must try to famous local red wine. We will be back soon!

On one of the first really warm days of this summer, we decided to check out "Neusiedlersee". Located about 70 km to the south east of Vienna on the border to Hungary it is the largest endothermic lake in Central Europe with 315 km² in size. The lake has a unique natural landscape with the wide plains, idyllic vineyards and a unique habitat has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. We chose to drive to the Strandbad Breitenbrunn where the Viennese restaurant "Hollerkoch" has a Pop-up location with delicious food. And it didn´t disappoint. It was a relaxed day by the water with great swimming and Stand-up paddling followed by fabolous Fish & Chips. There are more towns and restaurants around the lake and we will be back to try more!
