  1. Down South
It took us quite some time to find the right hotel for the first part of our holiday. Hotels can be really expensive in Sardinia and we had to stick to our tight budget. We finally found an offer for the Free Beach Club Hotel on Secret Escapes and booked it for a week. Located on the southeastern shore of Sardinia in a village called Costa Rei and with direct beach access. The hotel is quite large but all buildings are very widely spread out. Our room was simple. had a nice small terrace, a large bed, good size bathroom and we were happy. Breakfast and dinner were served in the large restaurant which is the center of the hotel grounds. Food was okay, but especially breakfast could be improved. There was a large pool that was mostly used by families with small children. We preferred the long beach with white sands and clear water. Perfect to just lie on your sunbed, listen to the Italian chatter around you, take a dip in the water every now and then and relax. The Free Beach Club is a good hotel which I can happily recommend if you are looking for a fair price, a decent product, and are happy with simple food. Only the Wifi was terrible, but that was our experience everywhere we went in Italy.

  2. Up North
After staying in the South for seven days, we checked out and drove to the Northern part of the hotel. Our next hotel was called Lu Nibareddu and is located half an hour south of the city of Olbia, close to the town of San Teodoro. The hotel is made upon a number of buildings and the residences are spread out and never more than two stories high. Our room felt like a little apartment with a kitchenette and a large terrace and garden. The beach is approximately 15 minutes walk down the hill or a short drive by car. Transfers are also available if needed. The layout of the room and residences feel like a little village due to the various buildings with a separate pool and restaurant. There are many villages and towns in the area to visit, numerous beautiful beaches and the airport is also close by. This area feels livelier than the southern part we visited first and there are many options for things to visit and activities to do.

We love Italy and we keep coming back to discover more. And when we started planning this vacation, Sardinia quickly came to mind. After four days in Rome, we flew with Alitalia from Rome to the capital of Sardini, Cagliari. This flight only takes one hour and we quickly arrived at the Mediterranean\'s second largest island. Once we got our luggage, we headed to the car rental station and picked up our Carmen to drive to our first hotel, which I introduce to you when you read on further. We divided our time on the island and spent some time in the South and some in the North. To us, the North seemed a bit busier with more things to see and explore. But all in all we loved everything about our divers holiday. Beautiful landscapes, hotels that fit their surroundings (we did not see any massive hotel blocks which we loved), fabulous Italian food, professional and friendly service wherever we went, stunning beaches, crystal clear water and sunshine. And to top it all of, it took under two hours to fly home to Berlin from Olbia. If you haven\'t been, do try it out. It is absolutely worth it in my opinion!!

1. Maklas (Southern Sardinia) One evening we wanted to eat outside the hotel and chose a restaurant called "(link: http://www.maklas.it/en/ text: Maklas)", just a few kilometers away from the hotel (FreeBeach). There were only a handful of guests and we instantly fell in love with this place. It is located directly at the beach and we got a table directly at the waterside. During the day it is a typical beach restaurant and in the evening it feels more like fine dining with sand between your toes. Tasty wine, delicious food, fantastic service. Please try this restaurant if you are in the area. I am sure you will love it - the mood, the water, the taste... Perfect! 2. Da Marco (Northern Sardinia) This fabulous restaurant called (link: https://ristoranteportotaverna.it/en/il-locale/ text: Da Marco) is located directly at Porto Taverna beach with stunning views of the island called Tavolara. Very romantic location, great seafood but I recommend you make a reservation if you want a front-row table close to the water.

Things to do in Sardinia

c:Cagliari

**Visit Cagliari** We had too much sun one day and decided to try and stay away from it for a while. So we took our rental car and drove down the coast to Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia which is located on the Southern tip of the island. It has a harbour where cruise ships stop and a medieval walled quarter situated high above the rest of the town. This is a nice place to visit and offers great views. Architectural highlights include the 13th-century Cagliari Cathedral, the Bastione di Saint Remy from where you have beautiful views over the city, harbour, and some historic sights. When you visit during the day, the city feels quite empty as most shops are closed until 4 PM due to the heat. We found a lovely spot for lunch in a restaurant called "Taccas" with tasty local food and a nice outside seating area. Nice, but hot day trip. Maybe try this during the late afternoon or evenings... **Try as many beaches as you can** The area of San Teodoro is full of stunning beaches. Some are busier than others, but all of the ones we saw had beautiful clear water and white sands. The one closest to our hotel in Northern Sardinia is called Porto Taverna. Beautiful turquoise water, a little stylish beach bar where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas. From this beach, you have beautiful views of the island Tavolara which is located in the middle of the bay. We also spend time at the beaches La Cinta and Lu Impostu which were both really pretty too. All beaches we visited had parking, a place to buy some snacks and to rent sunbeds and umbrellas too. There is no wrong choice with regards to the beach in this area in my opinion. **Find the Pink Flamingos** The Sardinians are proud of the (link: http://www.santeodoro.com/en/news-blog/itineraries/59-san-teodoro-lagoon text: lagoon of San Teodoro) because it is one of the greatest natural treasures of the island. And the home of many many pink flamingos amongst all the birds that live here. There is a marked trail around the lagoon that can be followed or you book a trip on a boat around the lagoon to see the beautiful birds. Stunning landscapes, expert guides, and some great birds can be seen during this excursion. Only the flamingos were missing when we went. We saw one flamingo in the distance because June is not a time to see them at the lagoon. The start flying back here as of July, August time... still a fabulous and peaceful place to visit...

A no beach day in Sardinia

c:Porto Cervo
a:Unknown Address
r:Sardinia

We decided on a no beach day to see some of our surrounding areas in the North of the island. We headed to the famous town Porto Cervo and Costa Smeralda which Sardinia is famous for. Porto Cervo is a beautiful town that even looks rich and expensive. It was nice to see but after a quick look around we moved on. Apart from Costa Smeralda, Sardinia is also famous for its Nuraghe sites. There is no consensus on the original function of the nuraghes. There are many possible explanations ranging from rulers residences, military strongholds, meeting halls, religious temples, ordinary dwellings, or a combination of the former. We visited La Prisgiona, a nuraghe and a village comprising around 90-100 buildings, spread across 5 hectares. Great to look around this ancient sight and learn about its history. After our visit, we searched for a beach restaurant for a late lunch and found Pedro's, which is located at a beach called Rena Bianca. Perfect place to enjoy Pasta, the view of the beach, and for a break. Driving back to our hotel, we stopped in Olbia for a quick look around. Admittedly, it looks like a nice town with some shops and restaurants around but there was not much to see and do. So we walked around for a bit and made our way back to San Teodoro to relax...
