Mykonos

Mykonos is one of the more well known Greek islands and quite famous for its party and jet-set tourism. We chose this as our second island stop during our holidays in September 2018. One can travel to Mykonos by boat (ferry) or plane and I can only imagine how busy it gets in summer. At the beginning of October it was still warm and busy but not crowded. Mykonos is one of the Cycladic islands and was named after Apollo’s grandson Mykon. There is a large number of restaurants and hotels on the island and it seemed that tourists come from all over the world. We heard so many different languages spoken and it felt quite international. I liked Mykonos for it’s vibe and energy. Great place to go if you had enough peace and quiet :)

Andros & Mykonos, Greece

In 2018 we decided to give Greece another go for our summer holiday. The Greek Islands are perfect for summer, sun, and relaxation. It is however hard to choose where to go with so many good options around. After much deliberation, we decided to stay on two different islands, a well-known one and an island we and many people we spoke to, had not heard of before. We booked our flights to Athens, took a taxi from the airport to the port of Rafina on the eastern side of the Greek capital. From Rafina we then took a ferry to our first stop, the island of Andros. This was about a two-hour journey with great views of the Aegean sea and lots of holiday feelings. It’s quite easy to travel by ferry as they run regularly at different times of the day. Do read on below for more on this lovely island-hopping holiday!

Andros Island

We chose to stay on the lesser-known island Andros for the first part of our two week holiday. Andros is after Naxos the second largest of the Cycladic islands. It has less than 10.000 inhabitants and is one of the quieter Greek islands. And that was exactly what we wanted. Beautiful beaches, nice restaurants, not much to do and see, hiking paths and some wifi. The weather, however, didn’t play ball and after one stunningly beautiful day at the beach with turquoise waters and only a handful of other tourists, the winds started to pick up and the rain came along too. So we had to look out for things to do besides sunbathing... Hiking was definitely an option, but due to the strong winds, only inland hiking was possible. Driving around and visiting the Harbour and coastal towns was another option and we explored this a bit too... This island is made for summer really. When the sun stays away, there is not a whole lot you can do besides sleeping, reading and eating. Which was good for the week we stayed!

Aegea Blue Cycladic Resort

There is a small selection of hotels in Andros and we chose the Aegea Blue Resort. From the port, we rented a little car and drove for about half an hour to get to the Aegea Blue Cycladic resort which is located to the northeast remote part of the island. The resort consists of little houses that are supposed to look like a typical local Greek village. The resort has one restaurant, one pool, and access to a beautiful beach with really clear blue waters. The rooms were all really spacious, with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a separate living room. Some had a balcony and some rooms were leading out on a terrace with lovely views over the estate and the bay. The beach has pebbles, sunbeds, a little restaurant, and the most beautiful waters. The pool had a good size and was equipped was great sunbeds and umbrellas. All meals were served at the main restaurant in the middle of the resort and for the most part, the food was really good. Home-cooked and served as a menu by the small on-property team. All in all, it was a small operation and felt very familiar and cosy. Although we were unlucky with the weather, we did enjoy our stay. The staff tried their very best to accommodate all guests wishes and requests and we can wholeheartedly recommend this resort!

Things to do in Andros

If the weather is nice, there are some really nice beaches to check out. We rented a car and we also saw some people with quads and scooters driving around the island. Especially the north side of the islands has some really pretty beaches and many have restaurants too. I am unsure what high season is like, but in September there were some tourists but not too many and it felt very nice and easy to travel around. There are a number of hiking paths around the island that one can explore. They are numbered and either take you along the coast (only go if there is next to no wind) or inland. That was a nice way to spend a day., be active and discover your surroundings. And there are also some smaller towns to be visited. We drove to the town of Andros which is pretty, with nice views, restaurants, and some shops. Mpatsi is also nice with a cute little Harbour and restaurants that look out on the water. Andros is a good off the beaten track option for Greece and worth a visit in summer. If you are island hopping in Greece, do plan to stay in Andros for a few days, you will like it!
