Upstalsboom Hotel & Spa

July 2016
Germany, Kühlungsborn

The 4-star superior Upstalsboom hotel is located directly opposite the seafront. It is a great modern hotel with maritime aspects that connects to the surrounding area. The rooms are airy, spacious, and modern with large bathrooms that leave nothing to be desired. Balconies on every room and views either to the gardens or the water. The delicious breakfast buffet is served until 1 PM, the restaurant has a big summer terrace to dine outside and my personal favourite is the waffle machine where you can make your own fresh waffles. Great place to stay in a fabulous location and lovely staff that know how to properly look after their guests!

From Berlin, you can be on the beach in under three hours. This is exactly what we did this July weekend. Our destination was Kühlungsborn, north of Rostock on the Baltic Sea Coast. We chose to stay at the Upstalsboom Resort and Spa Hotel directly at the waterfront. The city of Kühlungsborn has two parts, east, and west and our hotel were located in the middle. A pedestrian walk connects both parts of this town as well as a cobblestone street where cars and bicycles go. Summer is of course high season, but people enjoy the calming destination all year round. Summer is busy and there is hardly an empty room or apartment to be found last minute. For me, it is a great weekend destination if you are based in Berlin or Hamburg or anywhere in between. And people also spend a week or longer enjoying the beach life.

**The Beach** The beach is a long sandy beach, with only a few rocky patches. People either rent a strandkorb for the day or bring their beach towels. The water even in summer is cold, only about 18 degrees Celcius when we were there. It is definitely refreshing... If you have a dog with you, you can find some designated dog beaches where they can run free and go swimming too. All along the waterfront, you can find restaurants and shops where food, drink, and ice cream can be bought. **Cycling** The hotel rents out bicycles to their guests for 9€ per bike and day. Cycling is really easy in the area and a great, fun way to spend the day. All cycling paths are clearly signposted and it is pretty flat and easy to cycle everywhere. We went east towards the resort of Heiligendamm, which is Germany's oldest seaside resort, dating back to 1793 and is also being called the White City by the sea. The cycling path takes you next to the waterfront, past the fields, through the beautiful woods, and all along the way are rest areas where you can stop relax and enjoy the view. Take your swimming gear during the summer as the beaches in Heiligendamm are pretty good and perfect for a couple of hours of beach fun

**Fischers Fritze / Brasserie Kühlungsborn** We chose this beautifully appointed restaurant for dinner. The waitress was really friendly and looked after us very well. Due to its name "Fischers Fritze" we went for fish of course. We had mussels and plaice were both delicious followed by an excellent strawberry rhubarb crumble. Definitely worth a try! **Fisch Hus** Great place for a break or a lunch snack. Mostly self-service and many seats to sit outside. Great fish, great beer, and the smell of the sea!!
