After an extensive search for the perfect hotel I chose the "Almwellness Hotel Pierer" and it surely didn´t disappoint. A fourth-generation family-run hotel that evolved from a once 20 bedrooms hotel for hikers to a 4 Star Superior Hotel Wellness Hotel which became the 2020 Gault Millau Hotel of the Year. Truly a hotel after my taste with a real story to tell. The family is present throughout the hotel and they and all their staff were so welcoming and friendly right from the beginning, true hosts from arrival to departure. The hotel is located on the "Teichalm" with views of the valley and the mountains (and cows). It is a relatively wide-spread hotel area with a large restaurant on different levels, bar, and wine cellar, an extensive pool sauna, and wellness area as well as 75 beautifully appointed rooms and suites.

Almenland in Austria

For my birthday this year, my family gave me the gift of relaxation. A weekend away for me and Alex in Austria, payed for by my loved ones. A really thoughtful gift and I was so looking forward to spending a long weekend somewhere in the Austrian mountains in a beautiful hotel. There is a huge choice of modern yet classical Austrian hotels that look after your every needs. So the choice was mine and I picked the Almwellness Hotel Pierer in the Almenland natural preserve park in Eastern Styria, about 2 hours south of Vienna. Almenland is one of the largest alpine regions of Austria, perfect for hiking, biking, eating and nature at it´s best. So off we went and here is our story:

Hotel Pierer Food & Drinks

I think we weren´t hungry once during our three days stay at this hotel. Delicious food and drinks were always available and we were spoilt for choice. Breakfast was served in buffet style with a big choice of various dishes, a great bread selection, fruits, all kinds of coffees, cheeses, and much more. Just a few hours after breakfast and typical Austrian lunch ("Jause") was served in buffet style, followed by an absolutely fabulous 6 courses dinner with great choices for vegetarians too. The hotel offered various activities throughout our stay and guests can sign up to take part, according to their interests. We wanted to be part of the Wine Tasting, hosted by the owner Alfred Pierer himself. 10 other guests joined and we spent two short hours talking about wine, trying wine, and learning more about his passion to be a hotelier who now also owns a vineyard!!

Hotel Pierer Pool & Wellness

The Hotel also offers a large Pool and Wellness area which is perfect after a day out in the mountains or if you just want to spend a full day here. Saunas, Massages, Beauty Treatments an indoor and outdoor pool as well as a little natural lake invite wellness lovers from all over. And the new infinity pool is the photo hot spot of the hotel where you swim while watching the cows in the alps...

Almenland Hiking

Since moving to Austria earlier in 2020 we have gotten into hiking. We bought the shoes and the jacket and came to enjoy the long walks in the mountains more and more. We chose a hike around the "Heulantsch" mountain, across the "Almland", over fences, and around the many cows that spend their days on the grass. We started at the hotel and hiked for approx. 13 km around this alpine region. You can stop at different huts on your way for something to eat and drink or you bring your own and enjoy the view while you eat. I have included the link to our hiking trail here and there is a great choice of many different trails to be found there too. A great day out in nature and a beautiful, peaceful experience. A dream area for hiking lovers!!

Teichalm

Teichalm and Sommeralm form one of the largest contiguous alpine pastures in the Alps. The heart of Teichalm is a lake with the attached moor area, an easy 15 Minute walk from the hotel. Very inviting for easy hikes and a selection of great huts for delicious food and drinks.

My Austria Bucket List

Over the past weeks, I have done some research into the must does in Austria to create my own Austria Bucket List. I read other Travel Blogs, I asked my Instagram community, I checked the website of the Austrian Tourism Board and read many other articles and recommendation pages, to come up with a list of at least 10 things I feel we really must do in Austria. Some are obvious and I found them on nearly every list I looked at. And some are a little different and I am really excited to start planning and doing all things on my list. I will update this article as we work on experiencing our bucket list and maybe a few of them are for you too: - **Hallstatt** - Visit this town for the scenery, the cobblestone streets, the salt mines, the cafes on the lake. It is a must-do, it´s on many lists and I so look forward to seeing it for myself! - **Salzburg** - I landed at Salzburg Airport to go skiing a few times in the past but I have never visited the city. So Salzburg is definitely a to-do to explore the city along with the (link: https://www.salzburg.info/en/salzburg/the-sound-of-music/shooting-locations text: “Sound of Music”) filming locations. Thank you Sarah Post for the hint, love it!! - **Wine Picnic** - There is such a lovely wine culture in Austria and I want us to get a picnic with accompanying wine from a local winemaker and enjoy the delicious products sitting in the grass! - **Walk a treetop path** (Baumwipfelpfad Salzkammergut or maybe Baumwipfelweg Althodis im Burgenland, I am still deciding) - **Visit the “(link: https://www.hotel-hirschen-bregenzerwald.at text: Hotel Hirschen)” in Schwarzenberg / Vorarlberg** - a tip from my Travel Industry friend Camille Cutrone Holubar, President of Vista Travel Consultants Inc. She has wholeheartedly recommended this very historic hotel (a hotel since 1755) and the full gastronomic experience that comes with it. So this definitely goes my Austria Bucket List, thank you Camille this is exactly what I was looking for! Can’t wait to go!! - As recommended by the “(link: https://miavia.com text: MiaVia)” Team in Vienna, visit **Burg Bernstein** in the Burgenland area for a historic and quiet weekend away - **Lake Hoping in (link: https://www.salzkammergut.at/en/lakes/artikel/detail/3029/lakes-salzkammergut.html text: Salzkammergut)** - pick a few of the 67 lakes and explore a handful at a time. Buy or rent a SUP and explore from the waterside. Cannot wait for summer to start! - Spend a night in a **mountain hut**! - Ride an **Alpine Slide ** - **Coffee House Hoping in Vienna** - so many great Cafes in the city, so many different experiences
